GALLERY ETHER is proud to present Awakening, a new solo-exhibition from Birmingham, Alabama based visual artist Chiharu Roach, to be held from Friday, October 15th through Friday, November 12th, 2021. 

Opening reception, with the artist in attendance, to be held Friday, October 15th from 17:00 to 20:00.

Originally from Nagoya, Chiharu Roach has been living and working as a visual artist in Birmingham, Alabama for over a decade. She is best known for her ongoing Tangled Hair series, which depicts female subjects with animals, insects, plants, and more interwoven into their hair. Delicately painted with the artist’s specially customized brushes, her mesmerizing and fantastic imagery suspends her subjects in a place somewhere between reality and fantasy, reflecting on their innermost thoughts and desires while simultaneously, both literally and figuratively, tying them to the natural world. 

In Awakening, the beloved Tangled Hair series continues with an all new set of paintings that delicately weave the real with the ethereal, the primordial with the superficial.

Chiharu Roach

Chiharu Roach is a visual artist based in Birmingham, Alabama. She is best known for her “Tangled Hair” portraits of females featuring animals and insects interwoven in their hair; where each strand is intricately painted with her custom tiny brushes. She was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan before relocating to Birmingham in 2001 and getting her art degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
