GALLERY ETHER is pleased to announce Ghosts of Tomorrow, an all-new fully-immersive solo exhibition by Tokyo-based Italian artist Leon Gallo, to be held from Saturday, April 26th through Saturday, May 17th.
In Ghosts of Tomorrow, Tokyo-based Italian artist Leon Gallo delivers a new collection of photographs taken over a 2-year period of exploring and documenting the haikyo (abandoned buildings) of Japan with consideration towards the socio-economic forces that drive these places into the limbo of abandonment and the ways in which these forces and stories continue to echo through time. Japan has been facing economic stagnation, population decline, and over-urbanization for years — problems that seem to have no clear solution. Today, it is often regarded as a nation slipping into obsolescence. But what if Japan isn’t a symbol of the past, rather a glimpse of the future, and we have yet to realize it? By juxtaposing found photography recovered from abandoned buildings with pictures taken today, Gallo seeks to draw parallels between Japan’s downward trajectory and the headwinds confronting advanced economies in this era of Global Economic Slowdown. Is there anything we can do to alter this direction, or are we fated to endure the same outcomes?
Drawing heavily from his photo-journalism background, Gallo presents this new collection alongside an assortment of written texts, as well as found objects and photographs, all set within a fully-immersive installation experience.
* A closing reception with the artist in attendance will be held on Saturday, May 17th from 17:00 to 20:00. We look forward to seeing you there!
*Please note that considering the immersive nature of this exhibition, no more than 5 visitors will be allowed into the exhibition space at one time.
